The thing about doing a truly DIY release is that, well, there is an awful lot to do yourself.
As you can see Jon has been slaving away over the website, and there is much more content to come.
Meanwhile I’ve been preparing for the release of The Boy with Pomegranates in His Eye e.p tomorrow, working away in a cottage industry that would warm the heart of any independent musician or label who has spent evenings with a craft knife and a stack of cases, assembling the e.p in all its packaged glory.
We received the masters of the tracks on Wednesday, and David Rogers (the mastering engineer) has done a wonderful job. The songs still sound they way we played and mixed them, but the e.p now has a cohesiveness and added punch that can only be achieved through mastering. We’re both really happy with the transparent way in which David has treated the tracks, and would heartily recommend the services he offers through his Village Mastering house (website to be forthcoming I believe).
Since then, I’ve been scoring the folds on the inserts, placing them in the cd cases along with the sleeves, burning cds, test playing them, and finally printing the cd design on before placing each finished disc in its case. Which doesn’t sound like much, but even with a small initial run of 100 units, there’s a fair amount of the midnight oil being burnt, which I think is a joy peculiar to DIY releases such as ours.

The first batch are all labelled and ready to be dropped in the post tomorrow, and so all that is left for us to do is spend the summer gigging and promoting the e.p. We’re both looking forward to taking a break from the (home) studio environment and getting back on stage.
Finally, there is an mp3 sampler of the e.p. available for free download for anyone who wants a sneak preview of the recorded tracks, or who wants to pimp Cake for Lily to their friends, family, and anyone else they think may enjoy our music. Please feel free to download and pass on the sampler, and to recommend our songs if you so wish. The sampler can be streamed or downloaded, although we will hopefully be moving it to Cake for Lily dot com soon.
