10 December 2007 : Breaking Radio Silence

It’s been a bit quiet up here for a while, something which we’re both working hard on changing – as always there is new web content in the pipeline, as well as potential gigs up north and down south, and new tracks slowly taking shape too.

I’ve moved back up north to York having completed the summer course at the Totnes School of Guitar Making, the product of my labours; a 12 string acoustic guitar pictured below on a rare day of sunshine, which will be taking up all guitar duties on the new Cake for Lily CD.

Of the new CD, while it is impossible to tell which tracks will make the final cut and which will be consigned to the vaults there are several new songs slowly ripening, Honeysuckle in particular is exciting me, and is turning out to be a bluegrass inspired slow burning vision of sunsets. The sounds I carry in my head for the new CD will hopefully be something new, but still recognisably Cake for Lily.

Our last live outing was 25th July, at our old stomping ground The Dartmouth Inn, in Totnes. It’s interesting to watch songs develop from the versions committed to tape (hard disk?) and take on their own personality when played live. I think the most memorable example of this is The Boy with Pomegranates in His Eye, which is slowly becoming a fluid, jammed out sea shanty with some very enjoyable mandolin breaks. Jon is also pushing the rhythmic elements harder in his guitar playing than the fingerpicking on the CD, and it’s a song I’m very excited about taking to a wider audience in the near future.

We also introduced a new song to our second set at The Dartmouth, an a capella cover of I Want to Sing that Rock and Roll by Gillian Welch, which is currently one of my favourite covers.

We’re looking forward to playing more gigs, and working on the new songs as well as introducing some new interpretations of old songs. Until then, our full set at The Dartmouth Inn was
