Welcome to the inaugural post for the brand-spanking-new, all singing, all dancing Cake for Lily blog. Here we’ll maintain contact with the outside world and keep you all up to date with all the latest Cake for Lily developments. Jon tells me there’s an RSS feed and everything (you can tell who is in charge of the technical gubbins), so subscribe and stay one step ahead of someone else. Or something…
Well we’re currently listening to Red Right Ankle by The Decemberists and reflecting on a weekend of hard work and hijinks. We cut the last vocal take for the e.p a few hours ago, and now both The Boy with Pomegranates in His Eye and Tiny Tremors are complete, save for Phillipa’s harmony parts – which are scheduled for next weekend up in York.
Rumours that we could have finished Tiny Tremors in fewer takes had Jon stopped laughing at running jokes from the One Step from Summer session may be well-founded, but remain unconfirmed.
Today is the first opportunity we’ve had to listen to all four tracks for the e.p, and to argue over track listing. No matter how well you think you know some songs, they can still surprise you once they’ve been completed, and I don’t think either of us really knew what to expect when listening to the e.p from start to finish.
I’m glad to report that having been forcibly restrained from going back and smoothing over any rough edges that were originally intentional, by our creative directors Middle Finger Consultancy (we are it must be said, eternal tweakers), we are both happy with what we heard, and are very excited about taking it out for other people to hear, both on record and live.
Of course, that’s not all we’ve been up to. We’ve mulled over and practised a few covers for the summer’s gigs down in Devon. Some songs will be pretty obvious to those who know us, and some will hopefully be less expected (especially the a capella rendition of one of my personal favourites).
That is probably all for now, but please stay tuned for more Cake for Lily news, abuse of run on sentences, and folky musings. I’m sure Jon will be along to post as the voice of calm and reason soon :)
Signing out for now
Kieran.
